Christmas is over and the New Year is upon us. You know what that means? Yep… time to get inundated with a ton of BS weight loss ads. Every diet product, low calorie item, weight loss program, transformation specialist personal trainer, “accountability” program, etc. will be coming soon in full force! This is their time of year to shine. They come bearing loads of unrealistic expectations and promises, zero programming based on science or common sense and supposed solutions to your every problem. For about a month you won’t be able to turn on the TV, listen to the radio or stand in line at the grocery store without some company or person trying to sell you on the latest and greatest gimmick to make you skinny, beautiful, and supposedly healthier.
So before you get sucked in…here is my PSA!
Diets don’t work! Weight loss programs don’t work! The perfect body doesn’t exist and won’t solve your problems! The pursuit of health and happiness does not come in a bottle, from a celebrity or in any packaged program guaranteeing results! If you can’t sustain the behaviors for a lifetime it won’t work and isn’t healthy. No one or company can guarantee results! Your body and weight don’t determine your worth, value or beauty! True health and happiness comes from the inside out. Don’t believe any program or trainer that says you can lose X pounds or inches in a specific period of time…its BS! 30-Day challenges are for the most part total crap! If your intention for working out is primarily appearance based, it won’t last for the long term and if it does last I’m guessing you aren’t being healthy about it! Finding a form of exercise that makes you feel good inside and out, strong, happy, and connected to your body will lead to health! Learning to listen to your body will lead to health!
Okay I think you probably get the point and you know I could go on. I don’t think people realize or are ready to accept the fact that diet/weight loss companies and programs are simply out to make money off you. They don’t give a shit if you ever lose a pound! And you better not start feeling good about yourself and take your health and happiness into your own hands because then they wouldn’t be in business.
You see if we stopped buying into the BS they are selling us, tons of companies would go out of business and we could take our power back. They are in the business of making you feel not good enough. They are in the business of disempowering you.
Now you’ve probably just spent the last month like most of us with an out of whack schedule and diet. You’ve probably trained less and ate more than usual. And the diet and weight loss industry knows it. So they sell the solution you think you need. But the truth is you don’t need what they are selling. You need to be realistic and healthy. You need to accept that one month out of the year with a little over indulgence won’t kill you. That you will get back into your routine like you always do. You need to make a realistic commitment to yourself that is feasible, sustainable and makes you feel good.
So before you purchase your next 21-Day Fix, start your next cleanse/Paleo diet or Weight Watchers point counting madness, or hire that trainer that is full of promises (of the empty kind) remember one thing…health doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not about how much you weigh!
Health is a lifestyle, a mindset and a process. Being healthy doesn’t mean never eating a certain food group or working out 24/7. Being healthy means listening to your body, moving your body in a way that makes you feel good, taking care of all areas of your life, making choices that support the health of your body, mind, relationships and bank account.
Look you only get one life and one body, yes taking care of BOTH are key but you don’t need to kill yourself dieting and training to do so.
So this year ask yourself…what is more important than reaching a certain number on the scale or wearing a certain size? Maybe it’s a feeling, intention, and life goal achievement. Focus on taking actions that bring you closer to living a healthy life and creating a life that is happy and fulfilling because that my friends can’t be found on the scale.
