RANT: Body Shaming is a Thing and It Needs to STOP!

On Saturday Matt showed me a Youtube video from Nicole Arbour titled “Dear Fat People”. We had discovered this Youtuber a few weeks back and watched a few of her videos, which we found kinda funny, but this recent video crossed the line. While I sat there and watched it I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. This woman was straight up bullying overweight people without a care in the world, or ounce of compassion. In fact in her video she says that fat shaming isn’t a thing…um hello that's exactly what you are doing and do you live under a rock lady, our society is obsessed with physical perfection and degrades anyone’s body who doesn’t fit the unrealistic ideal. Fat shaming is a thing…body shaming is a thing! It’s a huge fucking problem in our society!

In response to her repulsive video tons of other Youtubers surfaced with their own videos addressing their dislike of what she said. One Youtuber, Whitney Way Thore, had an amazing video in response to Nicole Arbour’s video that everyone should watch! I didn’t know who this woman was until now, but she’s the star of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life and she’s awesome!

She hit the nail on the head with how fat shaming and body shaming are a reality and big problems in our society! And this quote from her video sums it up, “A number, whether on a scale or on a measuring tape, cannot quantify the value that you have. It cannot count all the ways this world needs you. It can't define your health or project your success. Your weight does not measure your worth.”

Everyone needs to realize that your body size or shape DOES NOT represent your health or worth. Skinny and fat people suffer from the same diseases. Sometimes skinny people live more unhealthy lifestyles than fat people. And sometimes skinny people live healthier lives than fat people. Some skinny people hate their bodies and so do some fat people. Some skinny people suffer from mental health issues and so do some fat people. Some skinny people have eating disorders or disordered eating and so do some fat people. Your body does not indicate how much you workout, how “healthy” your eating habits are, or how healthy you are emotionally. We cannot judge a book by it’s cover. And just because society tells us a certain size or shape represents health and success it doesn’t’ mean that’s true. Most of the people telling us that are trying to make us feel like shit to sell us something. Please don’t fall victim into believing the BS.

We need to stop focusing on weight and size and start focusing on overall health. We need to help each other learn to listen to our bodies. We need to respect each other and have compassion. We need to support each other in adapting a healthy lifestyle inside and out.
The reason most people never reach their
Fat shaming and body shaming are just making our country unhealthier physically and mentally. You can’t beat someone down to make him or her live a better life. You have to have empathy, compassion, honesty, respect and love. I have a gym full of women of all different shapes and sizes and their body size and shape doesn’t tell me what they can or cannot do, their performance does. The thinner girls aren’t always in better shape than the bigger girls. And sometimes they are. Every BODY IS DIFFERENT and they way your body looks doesn’t dictate what it can do.

I wonder sometimes what our world would be like if we stopped worrying about what everyone else’s bodies looked like and how much they weighed. I wonder if we would all just have the freedom then to eat and move intuitively. If we quit caring so much about what other’s think of us, would we then be able to simply find a form of movement that makes us feel alive and eat foods that make us feel good and promote our health. Would we be able to enjoy treats in a healthy way and heal our disordered eating? I think so!

While I can’t change the world, I can do my best to create my little pocket of the world that doesn’t promote BS, bullying, defeating, harmful propaganda like Nicole Arbour does. I can cultivate an environment built on acceptance, compassion and honesty. I can build a community that values each other based on who you are NOT what you look like.

I know a lot of people feel the way Nicole Arbour does about fat people and I hope at some point in their lives they will realize what is really important and how judgment of bodies is harmful not productive. The truth is our weight doesn’t matter but what matters is how we treat our bodies, others and ourselves. We need to harness our compassion for each other to open up space for people to heal their demons, overcome their issues and live the happiest, healthiest life they can regardless of size.

You can look amazingly healthy on the outside and be a disaster on the inside. Health and happiness are inside jobs. So let’s start respecting each other, loving each other and taking care of ourselves. When you focus on building a healthy life your body will do what it’s gonna do, it’s not your job to control it. Some people lose weight and some people don’t, but if you know you are making healthy choices that enhance your life, fuck what anyone else thinks about how you look because you know what you are doing, working on and dealing with.
 
All fat and body shaming does is perpetuates self-deprecating talk and actions. Being beat down or beating yourself up doesn’t lead to success or health. It keeps you stuck! When you stop the shaming you have space to learn about yourself, your behaviors and why you do what you do and THAT leads to success or health in all areas of our lives.

So please join the movement to stop body shaming! Share this post with your family and friends, talk about the negative impacts of this behavior and be kind to own another. We are all fighting our battles that no one knows about no matter what size you are.
