The Devil is in the Details!

It’s easy to get stuck and paralyzed by the prospect of achieving a big goal. Our minds race with all the “to-do’s”, “how-to’s”, and unknowns. It seems like there is so much to get done that we can’t even take the first step. It feels like there is a mountain in front of us.

This has happened to me numerous times as a competitive athlete, businesswoman and in life. Whether my goal was to participate in a competition, launch a new business idea, buy a house or find a new partner, I initially always found myself overwhelmed and paralyzed. Sometimes I knew what I needed to do, I just couldn’t get myself moving. Other times I hesitated to take action because there was too much unknown.

Today, I was talking to Coach Carmen about her goal of moving out and getting her own place. This is something she has wanted to do for some time and has been getting herself ready for the leap. She’s been feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of moving out because she didn’t know where to start. Cost, expenses, budgeting, etc.…she needed to know the details.

Carmen has done the inside work of overcoming some emotional struggles and has prepared herself for taking action. It’s important to make sure your mind is ready and clear before taking a big risk or making a big change. If you jump first and aren’t mentally ready everything can backfire. She has the hard work done and now needed the information.

We spent an hour laying out all the details of moving out. We talked about location, rent, expenses, budgeting, job searching, hourly rates, cash flow, savings, etc. You name it; we covered it. And the more we talked, the less anxious she got. At first she thought seeing the details in black and white would make her more nervous, but in reality she found that the details helped ease her anxiety. She now is armed with knowledge. This risk is now longer filled of so many unknowns. The details we discussed now give her a place to start and a guide to map out her next steps.

It really is all about the details. We often don’t realize the impact of the smaller aspect of things. We get so focused on the big task, the end goal that we don’t realize the answers (and problems) are in the details. We need to take the time to lay out those details. Think of every little thing related to the big goal. Brain dump on paper and let it all out. Be honest and real with yourself, don’t hide or hold anything back. If you don’t put it out there, it will creep up on you later.

Getting clear on the details gives you the brain space to take action and it gives you steps for an action plan. Don’t just say to yourself “I need to ______” or “One day I want to _______” instead sit down and get it on paper. Whether you want to get healthier, build financial freedom, move out, find a better job or the man of your dreams, you need to investigate the details. All the stuff that needs to be done, that’s holding you back, and everything in between. Maybe even grab a friend or someone you trust to help you suss out the details. Ask yourself lots of questions and leave no rock unturned. I promise it’s the details that make all the difference. And if you can focus your efforts on the smaller pieces of your goal before you know it you will wake up and say to yourself, “Wow look at what I did!”.
