5 Steps to a Happy, Healthy Holiday Season!

In case you missed the memo the Holiday Season is here! And for most of us that means food, parties, shopping and did I mention food! The Holidays are full of love, joy, and fun for the most part, yet there is also that “out of your routine, food everywhere all the time” thing can lead us to feel just a tad bit stressed out.

When eating takes center stage in one moment and you can’t seem to find the time to cook a legit meal the next you are left overwhelmed, undernourished, overeating, and unsatisfied. So how do you navigate the holidays as healthy and happy as possible? Try these 5 tips:

1. Listen to internal vs. external cues. Try checking in with yourself when you are eating to figure out if you are full or not versus cleaning your plate just because there is still food on it. You can continue eating even if you are full, but just checking in within yourself re-connects you to your body’s cues.

2. Set boundaries. You get to decide how much or how little you want to eat. Yes family and friends will pressure you to have seconds and unfortunately may even give you glares when you eat more than they deem appropriate, but guess what?! You are an adult and you know what’s best for you. This doesn’t mean rebel with an “Ill show you attitude”, it means you are in charge of you and have the right to have more or refuse.

3. Be present. A key to health and happiness any time of year is being present. When you are attuned to the taste, texture, smell, etc. of your food and savor your favorite dishes you will find you enjoy the eating experience more, will most likely eat less and feel more satisfied.

4. Don’t “save up” for holiday meals. The save your calories up for your holiday meal fit tip is a bunch of BS. Yea barely eat all day and save your calories so you can binge at a holiday meal…brilliant! NOPE! Eat regularly throughout the day. Eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. When you are heading to a holiday meal you want to be mildly hungry NOT starving. Mild hungry will lead to a more fulfilling, satisfying eating experience. Wait all day to eat and you are doomed to binge!

5. Give to yourself. You have to take care of your own needs especially during the holidays. It’s easy to get caught up in the gift giving, baking, helping others/volunteering, wrapping presents, making meals, and on and on…all the while forgetting to take time for you! Schedule some “me” time during the holiday season. Whether it’s boxing, a yoga class, a massage, or a walk make sure you take care of your needs as well as giving of yourself.
