Ah yes! My favorite time of year...lol...not really! Actually I don't mind the cold or snow at all, but it's the insane amounts of weight loss, diet, quick fix, gimmick BS we get inondated with this time of year that makes my crazy! We shouldn't call this time of year winter, we should call it diet season. You can't turn on the TV without hearing about "100 Calorie yogurt", how to lose 10lbs in 10 days, along with every health club on the planet doing some stupid weight loss challenge/promo. I'm sorry I know I might seem crazy but I cannot stand this stuff. Diets don't work! Overtraining doesn't do you any good! And the billion dollar diet/fitness/weight loss industy is feeding vulnerable people a load of crap! Yea as you can tell this whole topic gets me a bit heated!
Here's the deal people! I have no problem with taking inventory of your life, reflecting on the previous year (see last week's blog), and setting goals & intentions. I think it's great! I do it myself. But the truth is we gotta get real here! Yes a lot can happen in a year, you can change your life, but truth be told any changes that are made to last won't happen over night. You won't, most likely, lose 10lbs in 10 days and keep it off for a lifetime.
Sometimes I feel bad that I constantly preach about the nonsense in all of this, I truly don't want to discourage anyone from making healthy lifestyle choices and changes. I just hate seeing people each year set themselves up for failure and then beat themselves up for not achieveing some unrealistic goal. It's damaging to your body and mind.
Do yourself a favor this year and set your goals, resolutions, intentions around things that really matter. Give yourself small achieveable tasks to work towards that you can build into your lifestyle slowly and comfortably that will stick over the long haul. If you can't imagine doing what you are doing right now your entire life....IT WON'T LAST OR WORK! This is true for eating, health, career and realtionships.
I know most people around you are setting their annual weight loss goal, jumping on the latest diet craze bandwagon and heading to the gym for some insane workout plan, but resist the urge to follow suit. I know it's tough! You want to look and feel better, we all do! But dieting and overexercising for a short time will only lead to feelings of frustration, disappointment, and failure along with metabolic damage and lack of long term results.
This year challenge yourself to think about how you want to feel and what you want your life to look like. Do you want to be strong, flexible, more powerful, or have more stamina? Do you want to step out of your comfort zone and try a new activity or sport? What type of activities make you feel alive? Do you like running, punching, lifting, etc? If it makes you feel excited and alive you will stick with it! And that is all that matters. Maybe you won't lose 10lbs in 10 days or even in 10 months, but you will feel stronger, healtheir, less stressed and happy. I think those things hold more "weight" and value than 10lbs. And hell maybe a by product of enjoying movement could be weight loss, for some it is.
And hold back from buying into the latest diet, or "I just need to eat healthy" game. Maybe this year you can try something new & innovative...trusting yourself and your body. Yes I realize that is scary sh*t for many of us! Diets have ruined our self trust, but you can start to repair your relationships with food and live a happy, healthy, diet free life. Why do what everyone else is doing and go diet crazy, instead explore the idea of Intuitive Eating!
How many years have you set out to diet, exercise and lose weight only to find that the full year passed and nothing changed? Don't put yourself through that again. Stop beating yourself up! The diet and weight loss industry are designed to make you feel like a failure, don't blame yourself. Your job is to look within, figure out what you want out of life, find activities that make you feel good, repair your relationship with food, resepct your body and enjoy life! You could spend the rest of your years hating your body and beating it up, that's always an option...but why? Life is short! Your body doesn't define you, you do!
So are you up for the challenge? Operation Knockout Dieting and Exercise as Punishment! Instead learn to trust yourself, your body and enjoy movement!
